VASCO: Rumour mills seem to be working overtime to indicate that a revolt seems to brewing steadily against Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chairman Deepak Naik, which may lead to the throwing up of a new face soon.
It seems evident that a group of Councillors, who allege that the former had failed to take them into confidence while taking decisions, have begun backroom consultations, possibly indicating the beginning of the end for the chairman.
Highly-placed MMC sources confirmed to this correspondent that the toppling game that had begun a few weeks ago has intensified during the past few days.
What’s more, the disgruntled councillors, from the ruling as well as opposition camp, who are upset with the chairman, have teamed up to pull the rug under Naik’s feet.
Naik who was elected as MMC Chairperson with the support of 17 councillors in the 25-member council seems to be aboard a sinking ship and if reports are to be believed, his replacement seems inevitable.
To make matters worse for the incumbent chairman, sources are quick to point that of the 17 councillors who stood behind him initially, now only 8 to 10 MMC councillors want Naik to continue as Chairperson, while 14 to 15 seem to be baying for his blood.
Of course, among the councillors are also those who have not decided which side of the fence they should be on.
Ironically, it appears that not only members from opposition camp but even few BJP councillors are now against Naik and the clouds of no-confidence motion looms large over Naik, who may have to pull a rabbit out of the hat to escape this precarious situation.
