MAPUSA: The Mapusa police have apprehended a 21-year-old Belagavi native in connection with a hit and run incident that caused injuries to a three-year-old child. The youth has been booked for rash and negligent riding.
According to SDPO Mapusa, Jivba Dalvi, the incident took place at around 1 pm on Tuesday in Khadpawado, Cuchelim, Mapusa. CCTV footage of the incident went viral, and showed that the accused, riding a scooter, collided with the minor child playing outside her house. In the video, he stops for a second and flees the scene, leaving the injured toddler on the street.
A dedicated team was formed, and Rakesh Shridrai Patil, a resident of Colvale, and originally from Karnataka, was arrested under Sections 279, 338 of the IPC and Section 134 of the Motor Vehicle Act. The scooter has also been seized by the police. The accused is currently in custody at Mapusa Police station.
Meanwhile, the injured child is safe and has been discharged from the hospital. The investigation is ongoing under the supervision of SP North Nidhin Valsan and SDPO Mapusa Jivba Dalvi.
