In a major breakthrough, Belgaum Police nabbed different interstate gangs of robbers and drug traffickers engaged in smuggling of animal hides and drug trafficking and have also attached a car from Goa.
The police have arrested 14 persons and have recovered silver idols, deer hides and narcotics, worth Rs 30,18,323, including some other items.
A Goa passing car with ‘PRESS’ written on it has been also seized.
Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, Superintendent of Police Sandeep Patil said police on Monday nabbed four locals from Rajasthan and Karnataka, who were carrying Afeem from a Goa-registered car.
An Indica car (GA-05/B-3038) was reportedly heading towards Goa was stopped near Indal Factory here on the National Highway. Afeem worth Rs 2.90 lakh along with the car and other valuables was recovered by the police.
According to reliable sources, an interstate gang of drug mafia is actively engaged in trafficking of Afeem and other drugs.
Police have arrested Poonam Amul Bishnoi and Ramsen Harisen from Rajasthan along with Satishkumar Shankarlal and Husseinsab Mehboobkhan from Gulbarga.
PSI Edwin Pradeep under the guidance of DySP Shanta Raju also nabbed two persons from Belgaum and recovered one 1.4 kg of ganja worth Rs 5,600.
Two motorcycles used for transporting the ganja and mobile phones and jewellery, worth Rs 56,000, were recovered from the culprits.
Police is on a lookout for their accomplices, who are allegedly operating from Goa and some parts of Maharashtra.
In another case, police have nabbed a gang that was engaged in robbing gold and silver idols and other valuable items in different temples in Belgaum and neighbouring districts.
Special squads were formed under the direction and guidance of SP Sandeep Patil and Additional SP S H Gangareddy. An interstate gang of eight robbers was arrested while idols and other valuables worth Rs 6.67 lakh were recovered from the gang.
In another major breakthrough, a gang engaged in smuggling of animal hides and horns was arrested. Deer skins and other items worth Rs 15 lakh were recovered.
Giving details, SP Patil said acting on a tip-off, persons carrying these items on two motorcycles were arrested along the highway near Kittur.
Fourteen hides and six pairs of antelope horns were recovered.
Kittur CPI Nagaraj and team arrested three persons from Bellary and Haveri in connection with the case.
