BELGAUM: When a Goan family found themselves without a room for one night in Belgaum, little did they realize that a Good Samaritan would offer them shelter in an unusual location: the customer’s lounge of an automobile showroom.
Goans were severely inconvenienced during the recent 10-day winter session of the Karnataka State Legislature and had to struggle to find accommodation in hotels and guest houses, which were fully booked by hundreds of government officials.
In one such incident, a Goan family had to face anxious moments to non-availability of hotels for accommodation and would have ended up spending a night by the roadside, had it not been for the concern of a kind-hearted entrepreneur, stated the security guard of Shantesha Motors, the dealers for Maruti cars in Belgaum.
When contacted, Vivek Kamalani, the young owner of the showroom, said a Goan family was in Belgaum around the concluding day of the winter session.
“The family was here in Belgaum for the health check of a child who had to be admitted for a day in the hospital. It was evening by the time the medical checkup was complete and since only one relative could stay with the child in the hospital, the family started to look for a hotel accommodation in the city,” said Kamalani.
“They were shocked to know that there was no room, as all hotels in Belgaum were overbooked for the assembly session. Left with no alternative, the family decided to spend the night in the car,” said Kamalani.
Since it was unsafe to park the car by the roadside, the family requested the security guard of the showroom if the car could be parked inside the compound of the showroom for security reasons.
The security guard then contacted his employer, Kamalani, and narrated the situation.
Kamalani spoke to the family and immediately felt sorry for their plight.
“I asked the security guard to accommodate the family inside the lounge of the showroom. “I felt sorry for the Goan family and I wanted to do something for them,” Kamalani told Herald.
