BELGAUM: Transport operations to Goa were suspended in Belgaum and surrounding areas, even as the Goa government claimed that the strike by transporters had no impact in the State.
Following the ‘Chakka Jam’ blockade declared by the All India Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) to Goa from Sunday midnight, transport organizations from Belgaum and Khanapur kept their trucks, tempos and taxis off the roads.
There was very little movement of transport vehicles along the Belgaum-Goa roads via Anmod, Chorla and Amboli. While Monday was a weekly off for the wholesale vegetable market in Belgaum, sources told Herald that vegetable vehicles were not loaded in Hubli and Dharwad. Heavy vehicles from Andhra and other areas were allowed to go to Goa via Belgaum.
“We allowed vehicles coming from far off areas to go to Goa only for a day and that too, after a stern warning to the drivers not to reload a next trip to Goa,” said Shareif Kittur from Londa.
Meanwhile, long queues of trucks and vehicles were seen near Banda, as transporters from Sindhudurg had blocked vehicles for several hours on the NH 17 at Banda since Sunday midnight.
