MARGAO: A group of residents from Benaulim led by Benaulim Panch member and Congress block President David Fernandes on Friday demanded a full-fledged bridge linking SInquetim and Benaulim over River Sal.
Armed with placards demanding the fulfilment of a long pending demand, the residents pointed that they are opposed to any plans to restrict the bridge to two-wheelers or only for pedestrians.
David told the media that the people will have no option than to take to the streets or knock the doors of the Judiciary if the Parrikar government does not complete the bridge work as per original specifications. “A Sinquetim-Benaulim bridge has been the long standing demand of the people from both sides of the river Sal. We can understand the concerns over the plying of heavy traffic, but the bridge can be built for four-wheeler and light vehicles. We are opposed to any plan to restrict the bridge usage only for pedestrians,” he added.
An elderly resident Vincent Rodrigues recalled that the people of Benaulim and Navelim in olden times used to cross the River Sal at Sinquetim to buy salt or to visit the beach belt. “I fail to understand why some people are supporting only a footbridge or a bridge for two-wheelers when the requirement is for four-wheeler bridge minus heavy vehicle,” he said.
