Benaulim farmers, locals anguished as raw sewage contaminates their fields

MARGAO: Farmers in Benaulim, along with local residents, have vehemently protested against the alleged discharge of sewage into the fields. They are calling for immediate action from the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB).

Farmers expressed deep frustration over how the sewage has not only ruined their fields but also caused skin-related diseases that afflict them. They fear that if this contamination continues, it could render their fields unusable for years, jeopardising their livelihoods. Additionally, they have claimed that the health of cattle that graze in these fields is also at risk.

Local residents, who have engaged with Benaulim MLA Venzy Viegas on this issue, claim that some housing societies lack functional Sewerage Treatment Plants (STPs). The MLA, in response, pointed out a failure on the part of the GSPCB in monitoring STPs. Residents have witnessed the visible discharge, which they believe originates from certain specific residential societies. They insist on GSPCB conducting an inspection, noting the foul odour emanating from this wastewater, casting doubt on its treatment.

“This issue is critically important to the future of farmers. The contamination of farmlands not only threatens the agricultural community’s sustenance but also endangers public health. Urgent action is necessary to preserve the environment, livelihoods, and well-being of those affected,” said a local resident.

The locals added that the water that flows into the fields flows out into surrounding areas too, meaning contaminated water could be flowing into fields in neighbouring areas and into other parts of the river’s tributaries in Salcete taluka.
