MARGAO: Benaulim fisherman Francisco Fernandes, popularly known as ‘Pele’, on Thursday joined the Goa Forward Party (GFP).
Francisco said, “This is my first political step to protect the traditional fishermen.”
Pele was handed over the letter of joining the party by Durgadas Kamat.
Pele said all this while he was a friend of Goa Forward Party president Vijai Sardesai and with the idea to protect the interests of the fishermen and traditional fishing business in Goa he has joined the Goa Forward Party .
“I trust Goa Forward Party and Vijai Sardesai will protect the fishermen and stop the illegal fishing practices in Goan waters,” Pele said.
Pele was felicitated by the Forest Department for rescuing and releasing sea turtles which got caught in fishing nets.
