margao:  The Ramponkars, patkars and other traditional fishermen from Benaulim have urged the Fisheries Minister to take them into the confidence while taking any decision on the utilisation of the Benaulim- based prawn hatchery for the proposed government project.

Fisherman Pele Fernandes recalled that the prawn hatchery, established in Benaulim in 1990, had faced electricity and water issues.

“Above all, traditional fishermen were bothered as there was a long pipeline which tore through the nets and caused hindrance. Traditional fishermen need land for our fishing equipment to be stored as the beach is eroding and reducing in size”, said Pele, while adding that this land is going to be very useful for the traditional fishermen for posterity.

The Fisheries Department recently advertised that they’re setting up a State of Art Shrimp and Fin fish hatchery on a PPP basis on the prawn hatchery land.
