Benaulim locals continue vigil, trace Colva hotel for waste dump

MARGAO, MAY 9
Vigil maintained by Benaulim villagers on unscrupulous hotel owners and garbage contractors disposing off their waste along road sides has once again paid dividends.
Even as the authorities, including the police seems to have turned a blind eye to the menace of waste disposal in the village, Benaulim villagers once again did the work of the authorities when they zeroed in on the hotel at Colva, which was allegedly involved in disposing off wet garbage and garden waste neat the St John the Baptist Church.
In fact, exasperated over the continuous dumping of waste on the road leading to the Church, the agitated villagers directed their ire at the hotel owner when he was called at site Sunday evening.
The huge quantity of waste was found dumped at the road side this morning. Based on the letter heads and garden waste found at the site, local youngsters zeroed in on the hotel and traced the establishment to Colva.
Their investigations revealed that the plants at the hotel premises were recently trimmed and further found that the waste was disposed off at the site in the wee hours of Sunday.
When the hotel owner was called at the site, locals pounced on him and directed their ire on him, warning that such things would not be tolerated by the villagers. The owner was made to collect and lift away the waste dumped at the site.
This is the third time in the last one week that Benaulim villagers have successfully tracked the vehicles and the owners for disposing off waste in the village.
A week ago, a group of local youth had intercepted at van near the Church while in the process of discharging waste water and garbage along the road side.
