Benaulim locals demand special gram sabha on western bypass project

Express disappointment towards approach of village panchayat toward the issue

MARGAO: Citizens from Benaulim have expressed total disappointment over the approach of the Village Panchayat Benaulim pertaining to western bypass project, and hence people have demanded special gram sabha to discuss the issue at the earliest. 

On Wednesday nearly hundred people from Benaulim held a meeting to discuss the future course of action in order to press for western bypass on stilts at Benaulim. Local MLA Venzy Viegas also attended the meeting. 

At the meeting many of them expressed total disappointment towards the approach of the Village Panchayat Benaulim. Panch member Xavier Pereira also brought to the notice of the people that the ruling group is not taking this issue seriously. 

However, later they decided to call for a special gram sabha to discuss on the issue, and also to inform the concerned block level officer about the meeting. 

Local MLA Venzy Viegas suggested going ahead in a legal way, and also declared his support to the people. 

People express fear of flooding in the monsoon if western bypass is not built on stilts. 

Benaulim locals are demanding the government to build the western bypass on stilts, fearing the destruction to the environment and ecology.

Recently, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant had assured to build the stretch of 1.2 kilometres on stilts. However, people of Benaulim are demanding a full stretch of 2.75 kilometres on stilts.
