Residents of Benaulim on Monday opposed a housing project on the road leading to the beach.
Agitated residents of the village assembled near the proposed housing project and conveyed a message loud and clear to the builder that they are against the project since it will not be beneficial to the local villages.
The residents maintained that they are suffering because of poor infrastructure on the power and water supply front, and added that the proposed project would only aggravate the situation in the village.
On the contrary, the villagers put up a demand before the builder, who happens to be hailing from the village, to make small plots of the property admeasuring 5000 square meters and sell them to the local villagers.
An aged woman said the villagers indeed are passing through severe hardships for want of water and electricity in the locality. “Instead of building a massive housing project, the builder should go for small plots and sell them to the local people”, demanded Euthenia Fernandes.
The residents made their presence felt at the property after they spotted construction work this morning. They demanded to know how the authorities approved the project when the villagers are fighting for water, power and roads.
Another villager said even a poor villager would not mind buying a plot if the builder agrees to their suggestion and make plots by abandoning the project.
The residents had discussions with the builder from the villager, and who is reported to have sought time of two days on the demand to sub-divide the property into plots.
