MARGAO: Following directives from the High Court to resume issuing construction licences, the village panchayat of Benaulim is optimistic about generating revenue through licence fees, which had previously hampered the panchayat’s works.
Deputy Sarpanch Glyda Rodrigues stated that the panchayat has already initiated the Material Recovery Facility for dry waste, and is now focusing on implementing measures to manage wet waste effectively.
Previously, an injunction had restrained the Benaulim village panchayat from issuing any construction licences due to the absence of a waste segregation facility in the village.
Recently, the High Court permitted the Benaulim panchayat to resume issuing construction licenses after the panchayat demonstrated that they have established the MRF and obtained approval from the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
Commenting on the matter, the Deputy Sarpanch highlighted that the panchayat suffered a loss of revenue from construction licence fees during the injunction period imposed by the court.
With the panchayat now actively collecting and segregating dry waste, and ensuring compliance with all guidelines provided by the authorities, she expressed concern over the adverse impact of the ban on revenue generation for the panchayat.
During the ban period, many villagers had applied for construction licences, but were directed by the panchayat to seek orders from the court, according to the Deputy Sarpanch.
She expressed optimism that with the recent court order, the panchayat will soon be able to regain revenue through the issuance of construction licences.
