MARGAO:  The two roads leading to Khareband bridge from Benaulim continued to be submerged under water for the second day on Sunday, even as the two marooned families from Pedda-Benaulim who were evacuated on Saturday continue to take shelter at the old district collectorate building.
Low lying areas around the Benaulim-Khareband bridge continued to be inundated today, hampering smooth flow of vehicular traffic. The River Sal was overflowing at several stretches for the second day, inundating large tracts of low lying areas along its banks.
The two families from Pedda-Benaulim, who were shifted to the old collectorate building on Saturday, have sustained a loss of Rs 25,000.
Meanwhile, social activist Judith Almeida said that the authorities should crack a whip against the illegal scrap yards operating close to the banks of River Sal. “The authorities should immediately inspect the areas which have been illegally filled up by unscrupulous elements and restore the land back to its original condition,” she said, while demanding action against the illegal scrap yards operating close to the river.
She demanded to know how the authorities have permitted the scrap yard to operate close to the river. “Let the authorities shut the scrap yards if they are operating without permission. They should also probe into other violations as well,” she said.
