MARGAO: Cana Benaulim Panchayat after a meeting with Banavlikarancho Ulo on Tuesday decided to convene an extraordinary gram sabha on October 20 to discuss the issue of migrants harassing the villagers.
At the meeting, the representatives of Banavlikarancho Ulo clarified that they were not targeting any specific community such as the lamanis but were aghast with the behaviour of all migrants residing in the village.
As many of them are taxi drivers, they said tourists always complain of the nefarious activities of the migrants on beach front where under the guise of massage they also promote prostitution and supply drugs.
The locals pointed out that the shops by the beachside are illegal and since the panchayat is not generating any revenue from them, they should be closed down.  They claimed that these stalls hamper the free flow of traffic.
Expressing their anger over the intimidation and threats by the migrants especially the lamanis to local Goans, the villagers said they would not tolerate this and warned of a law and order situation.
A villager said it would not be fair for the panchayat to take an unilateral decision on the matter and suggested that an extraordinary gram sabha be convened wherein all stake holders be called to discuss the matter.
