In a major breakthrough, the Maina Curtorim Police has cracked the Bethany Convent theft case as well as the burglary in the Krishna Temple at Cuncolim with the arrest of a person in the wee hours of Sunday.
Investigations have shown that the accused had twice burgled the Krishna Temple, besides the Rakhandar ghumti and recently lifted away the trophies and shields from the Bethany Convent.
Maina Curtorim PI Sidhant Shirodkar said the police achieved the breakthrough when a patrolling party intercepted two motorcycle-borne youths at Loutolim while proceeding towards Ponda. “Upon seeing the police party, the duo abandoned the Kinetic scooter and made good their escape. The patrol party, however, in a hot chase managed to nab one Sanjay Rathod. The second accused is still at large”, PI Shirodkar.
Investigations revealed that the duo was carrying a hammer and a cutter used to commit thefts.
The police said that the trophies and shields lifted away from the Bethany convent were disposed off by the accused to a scrap dealer at Vasco. The police is believed to have recovered the bells stolen from the Krishna Temple, besides the trophies from the scrap dealer.
The Maina Curtorim police are investigating under the supervision of DySP Umesh Gaonkar.
