PANJIM: The Crime Branch investigating the Vijaya Pagi murder case has claimed that the accused has divulged that he gagged the victim with her own saree after throwing her to the ground on January 31.
The Crime Branch further claimed that Ram Bharose told them that there was a physical struggle between Vijaya Pagi and him, when he dragged her in an attempt to rape her, but she was suffocated to death.
“He threw the victim to the ground while she was passing by with the fish basket. He then pulled her saree to gag her mouth so that she doesn’t raise an alarm. She tried kicking him and had even bit his hand in the attack, but he overpowered her,” said a police official wishing anonymity.
Bharose is also said to have told the officers that though she was dead, he sexually assaulted her.
The CB teams claimed a major breakthrough after the 20-year-old labourer’s arrest in the case. There was a public outcry in Canacona demanding immediate arrest of the culprit. Bharose had been a construction labourer since the past five months at a construction site near ITI, Mastimol, where he committed the crime. The accused is also being questioned to find out involvement of more persons.
Meanwhile, the evidence recovered during the probe will be sent to the central forensic science laboratory.
