CALANGUTE: Following complaints from residents of Calangute that the new traffic island at Bhodkovodd junction, is posing danger to vehicles as well as pedestrians, it has now been decided to build road dividers to demarcate the lanes properly.
Launching hotmixing work of the Calangute-Nagoa road, on Saturday, Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said a number of accidents were reported at Bhodkovodd junction, due to the confusion caused by the approach roads and the turns.
“To avoid this ,we’re putting a 80 metre-long road divider on the approach road from St Alex Church Calangute, so that the traffic goes left from there,” he said.
Lobo said, the PWD has also started widening of the road stretch from Calangute church till Bhodkovodd junction without cutting the existing trees there.
“The Calangute Biodiversity Management Committee had raised apprehensions that the trees would be cut. We want to assure them that the trees will remain. We’re trying to keep the trees in the middle of the road divider. Only those trees which are bent or are about to collapse will be cut,” he informed.
The road widening work along with a retaining wall is being done at a cost of Rs 3.6 cr, he said.
