PONDA: Hundreds of Bhoma locals blocked the national highway at Kali Mathi, Bhoma for two hours to protest the cover-up of an accident that claimed the life of a local girl. They alleged that the police quickly moved the vehicle involved and did not conduct a proper panchanama.
Locals were also shocked to see a policeman conducting the panchanama in civilian clothes. They later took possession of a police car at Kali Mathi and damaged it in protest. They claimed that the car’s occupants knew the Tempo driver.
The accident took place at around 7.30 am. Vrinda Santosh Naik (17), a standard XI science student, was crossing the road to take a bus to PES Higher Secondary School, Farmagudi. A mini tempo (MH-09-CA-9619), which was speeding towards Ponda, ran over her.
It was only after Deputy Superintendent of Police Dinraj Govekar assured to investigate the issue that the locals called off the rasta roko and allowed the blocked traffic to proceed.
