Biggest one day COVID spike in Goa

42 test positive in Mangor Hill; 5 others including two-year-old also positive

PANJIM: Goa’s worst COVID-19 nightmare may be surfacing as 42 persons from Mangor Hill, Vasco and seven from elsewhere tested positive for the novel coronavirus, indicating transmission of the dreadful virus in Goa.

After eight cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Mangor hill on Monday and Tuesday, the administration declared the area as containment zone, and the authorities started large scale swab collections on Tuesday. All the confirmed patients have been shifted to the COVID hospital.

Of 200 swabs collected on Tuesday, 40 were found positive. This development was confirmed by Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, who refused to admit it was a community transmission. With this the Mangor Hill tally now stands at 48.

Elsewhere, a two-year-old girl tested positive for COVID-19 by the TrueNAT test on Wednesday morning. The parents and the girl had travelled from Hyderabad by air. The girl’s parents have tested negative. Besides this, two persons who travelled from Dubai on June 1 have also tested positive, and two others who travelled from Maharashtra by road.

A total of 123 Goan passengers arrived from Dubai, of which 80 have been tested. 40 persons are yet to be tested, sources revealed. All 123 are quarantined in paid institution facilities.

There were also reports of a KTC bus driver testing positive for COVID, which led to all KTC staff lining up for testing at various government facilities.
