PANJIM: Conceding that high-speed bike racing and road stunts by youngsters have posed serious threat to the life and limbs of motorists and pedestrians, Transport Minister Ramkrishna Dhavalikar has assured the Goa Legislative Assembly that his department would maintain a close watch on these activities.
The minister was responding to a zero hour issue raised by Calangute MLA Michael Lobo stating that college students indulging in dangerous bike racing is posing serious threat to the general public. He referred to recent accidents wherein a young girl lost her leg and another youth succumbed to injuries.
Majority of the accidents Lobo said have occurred on Calangute, Saligao and Guirim roads. He alleged that police and RTO officials have failed to maintain proper patrolling and take action against the over speeding bikers.
Dhavalikar, while adding that the nuisance is also witnessed near Goa Engineering College, Miramar-Taleigao road and on plateaus, said the department will keep a close watch on these activities to avert accidents.
