VASCO: Panic struck Baina locals after they noticed thick smoke emanating from coal laden wagons stationed at the railway good shed at Baina on Thursday.

The residents immediately informed the railways authorities, who in turn called the Vasco fire station. The fire personnel sprayed water on the wagons to prevent any fire. The wagons were later opened and the entire coal cargo was sprayed with water as a precautionary measure.

This was the second such incident reported at the railways yard within a week.

SWR Vasco station manager Ramdas Gudemane clarified that there was no fire incident as was being speculated. He said that he received a message in the morning that some smoke was coming out of the coal laden wagons at the good shed at Baina and the staff immediately contacted the Vasco fire station, who rushed to the site and doused the smoke with water. There was no loss as such since there was no fire incident, he said.

When contacted, Vasco fire officer Vishwas Ashtekar suspected that the smoke in the coal wagon was due to the heat.
