MARGAO: Taking serious note of the fire incident at Sonsoddo dump yard, Solid Waste Management Corporation will resume the bioremediation exercise very soon.
Agnelo Fernandes, Chief Officer, Margao Municipal Council on Monday said that he had been informed by the SWMC that they are going to resume with the bioremediation exercise of legacy waste.
The remediation work has been pending for the last almost two years, and would not be able to resume it to date. The Chief Officer may be hoping the GWMC will start the work again, but seeing the situation, and with hardly a few months left for the arrival of monsoon, it won’t be possible to commence the same.
“I have been informed by the concerned government agency that the bioremediation exercise will resume in the next couple of days. The civic body is hoping for the best, and wants to get rid of at least the legacy waste dumped over here”, said CO.
He further informed that the civic body has also started the baling of waste behind the municipal building, at the place marked for the proposed multi-level parking project.
Shockingly, the situation at the Sonsoddo is not so good, as the civic body is finding it difficult to dump the daily waste, which is almost 50 tonnes per day. There is hardly any space left inside the shade of the old plant, which has forced the civic body to dump it wherever they find the place.
Meanwhile, the civic body has started to lift the legacy dump, which is lying at the Sonsodo after the remediation exercise.
On the other hand, many municipality workers were seen at the site engaged in capping the waste with a mud, in order to avoid further fire incidents. The whole area which caught fire on Friday has been capped.
The civic body has also begun the process of re-installing the two damaged baling machines which gutted in fire, besides repair work of the baling shade.
It is pertinent to note that a huge quantity of waste is dumped inside the old shade of the treatment plant. There is fear that fire may break out over here, as minor fire incidents have been reported in the past on a regular basis due to the presence of methane gas. The civic body is facing a tough time to get rid of this dump, failing to find the solution.
It may be also noted that the tendering process of proposed two 25 TPD plants at Sonsodo is also going under rough weather, and now hoping that the new government may take up this issue seriously.
