MARGAO: The bioremediation of the Sonsoddo old dump was started on Saturday.
Though three screening machines have reached the dump site, only one machine is being operated, which by afternoon generated at least 40 tonnes of fines and a large heap of plastic from the screening. The machines will separate the waste into three classifications.
Margao Chief Officer Ajit Panchwadkar has attributed the successful beginning of the screening of old dump to South Goa collector.
After the fire incident in May and in November last year, the District Administration team has been on its toes to ensure that the work of clearing the dump begins.
When asked to explain the process, Panchwadkar said, “It is the first of its kind and that the Railways have come forward and are willing to accept the derived fines for their use. The Railways have asked for a test of the samples of the fines and will accordingly decide on its use.”
The work is being done by the Hindustan Waste Treatment Company and is overseen by the Goa Waste Management Corporation, whose Managing Director Levinson Martins said, “For now we have created a space within the dump to store the derives.”
When asked regarding the Railways intending to take the fines, he said so far nothing has come from the Railways, but that is one possibility where they may ultimately be taken.
