Bioremediation of Sonsoddo waste, disposal of inert done as per guidelines, claims GWMC

MARGAO: All the mandatory precautions and safety measures are being followed during the bioremediation of the legacy waste at Sonsoddo, before dumping it at the other location, said Levinson Martins, Managing Director of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC).

He informed Herald that the bioremediation of nearly 75 percent of the legacy waste is complete, and the rest will be done within the February 2023 deadline given by the High Court.

Martins refuted the allegations of the citizens of Margao/Fatorda, who had held a protest at the secondary dump site near the SGPDA market, claiming that the waste disposed of there was mixed, untreated garbage, in the guise of remediated inert waste. The citizens had also filed a petition before the HC, calling for a probe into the allegedly ‘unscientific bioremediation process’ and raising questions if the contractor had indeed fulfilled all the conditions of the tender.

Martins explained that inert, compost and RDF are the three components that are left behind after bioremediation, and that all the required precautions are taken before dumping the inert elsewhere. “One must remember that the legacy waste at the Sonsoddo site is a massive quantity, and we have already remediated 75 percent of it,” said Martins.
