BIS has issued 70 licenses for manufacturing in Goa

BIS deputy director general (West region) says currently they’re working with govt and NGOs to help raise awareness about ISI certifications

PANJIM: Of the 92 products listed by Bureau of Indian Standards requiring mandatory certification, only 29 Goan manufacturers are listed by the organisation as having licences to manufacture these products. BIS has issued 70 licences for manufacturers from Goa.
Of the 29 products certified from Goa, packaged drinking water (other than packaged natural mineral water) registered the highest number of 19 licences. BIS that has granted over 29,000 licences said they were looking to grant more after subjecting products to their strict rules and standards.
Carbon steel cast billet ingots, blooms and stabs for re-rolling into steel for general structure have the second highest number of licenses at 11.
BIS deputy director general (West region) C K Maheshwari after meeting with the state-level committee on standardization and quality systems for Goa headed by acting chief secretary R K Srivastava said discussions were fruitful as both sides talked about ISI certification and its implementation.
“The quality control order has been made for all States but the implementation is with the State itself. In Goa, we don’t really have a lot of licences issued and we are currently working with the government as well as NGOs to help raise awareness about ISI certifications,” Maheshwari said.
Talking about the government’s recent decision to persuade the use of only ISI marked helmets as a positive move, Maheshwari said it was necessary and critical to the safety of the two-wheeler riders.
“It is one thing for riders to be wearing helmets, but an ISI marked helmet makes sure that in the event of an accident, the head is protected on impact, rather than causing hurt. ISI certified helmets absorb the shock caused during an accident,” Maheshwari said.
