VASCO:  BITS Pilani, Goa campus on Monday urged the Sancoale Village Panchayat and Verna Police Station to take strict action against unknown miscreants who are dumping large quantity of mixed waste opposite its campus in open space.

In his complaint, Arjun Halarnkar, public relation officer, stated that the people residing in the campus are facing problems due to this garbage menace.

“It is observed that some unknown miscreants are dumping garbage and burning it at the open area opposite BITS Pilani’s main gate across the road.”

“Some days ago, a letter was written to the village panchayat and Verna Police Station regarding this garbage dumping and burning menace, but so far the end result continues to be the same and people are not stopping from dumping and burning garbage in open. I feel immediate action needs to be taken from the concerned authorities to stop this nuisance,” Halarnkar said.

When enquired, he informed that the burning smoke is so strong and unbearable that it reaches to the administrative section building, residential quarters and campus area. The students, people working and residing in this premise face great inconvenience.

“In fact we have our own waste treatment plant where we treat all our garbage, but here we have to suffer because of someone else’s garbage which is being dumped and burned at close proximity of this campus. If the dumping of waste opposite the campus gate across the road continues then in rainy season the garbage, plastic may run down the drain and there are likely chances that this might choke the drains and natural flow of rainwater too,” he added.

When contacted Sancoale Sarpanch Girish Pillai agreed that one letter was made by the BITS Pilani to them regarding illegal waste dumping by the unknown persons. Police have caught and fined some people for dumping waste in open but some people tend to dump waste at wee hours which is out of our control.

He also mentioned that the panchayat is in the process of building garbage shed as a part of waste management. Panchayat is taking initiative to tackle this issue.

It may be recalled that two months ago one truck was caught red handed dumping waste in Sancoale area by one of the panch members from. Similar case happened last year wherein one truck was found dumping waste opposite BITS Pilani campus in open terrain.
