POINGUINIM: Birds of a feather flock together, but in this instance, two birds of different species have come together with common intention of defeating the candidates supported by Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar.
The two birds of unlike feathers are ex-MLA Isidore Fernandes of the Congress and ex-MLA of Canacona Vijay Pai Khot of the BJP. The duo used to wrestle each other during the elections and, besides abuses, also used to hurl pet bottles like missiles at each other.
Both men have now joined hands and can be seen canvassing for the candidates from their panel. Incidentally, their candidate Prathana Gaonkar of Kindlem (Ward 5) has already been elected unopposed.
What’s interesting is that both ex-MLAs are aspiring to contest the next assembly election. How they jettison their partnership to fight the next election will be watched with amazement by the people.
It was learnt that most BJP workers have a grudge against Tawadkar as he has appointed BJP poll observers who are not voters of the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) and hail from village panchayats.
Meanwhile, some candidates are undertaking hectic door-to-door canvassing with the help of the local youth, who are later given food and liquor. A candidate said that the youth and the elders earlier drank cheap liquor, but now they ordered for premium whisky brands.
According to social activist Premand Gaonkar, the voters should advantage of the situation as the candidates, after getting elected, will soon forget them.
