PANJIM: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar’s breezy Konkan campaign did not yield much dividends as BJP failed to stamp its authority in the area, despite the party’s sweeping victory in Maharashtra.
Shiv Sena asserted its stranglehold over Konkan region as their candidate Vaibhav Naik defeated Congress strongman and former chief minister Narayan Rane for the Kudal seat.
Deepak Kesarkar of Shiv Sena retained the Sawantwadi seat beating his former ally candidate. The party also stamped its authority in Ratnagiri. Congressman Nitesh Rane, son of Narayan Rane won in Kankavli,
Parrikar, who hit the headlines for his reported remark that Mopa will benefit the border areas, said the BJP fell short of efforts in Konkan region.
Reacting to the overall results in Maharastra and Haryana, Parrikar said the results clearly indicate that BJP has emerged as the principle party.
“People across the country have accepted it as main ruling party and they trust us for good governance. They are happy with the governance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We are above petty politics…,” he said.
Meanwhile, BJP spokesman and Sanquelim MLA Pramod Sawant was also ecstatic over the party’s excellent performance in Maharashtra and Haryana.
“We got full majority in Haryana but in Maharashtra we fell short of a few seats… indeed we are the largest party”, he said.
Sawant also said this is certainly because people are happy with the BJP and especially Prime Minister Narendra Modi who has come up with several plans and actions in the last 100 days since he became the PM.
Modi’s new and innovative ideas, relations with other countries, controlling inflation are some of many things to which people have responded positively… now, Congress will be wiped out in the coming years and elections, he said.
