BJP hobnobbing with criminals, women can’t get safety: INDIA bloc

PANJIM: Alleging that the BJP government has failed to give a safe environment to women, INDIA bloc leaders on Monday claimed that BJP is welcoming criminals in the party.

Addressing a press conference at Congress State Headquarters in the city, INDIA Bloc Goa spokesperson  Manisha Usgaonkar (INC) said all cyber crimes are taking place, but the government is doing nothing to arrest the culprits.

“Police are under political pressure. They should be given free hand to deal with cases. BJP speaks about women’s reservation during election time. But in reality, it fails to give justice to women,” Usgaonkar said.

Aam Admi Party (AAP) leader Cecille Rodrigues pointed out that India stands at 128 rank among 177 countries in safety.

“How safe is our country? We are termed as an unsafe nation. In Goa also we are not safe. Government has failed to give a safe environment to women and children,” Cecille said.

Rodrigues said the Home Department failed to properly investigate Siddhi Naik murder case.

“We have seen how a girl was killed in Mapusa and her dead body was transported to a neighboring state to destroy evidence. Recently a five-year-old gril was raped and murdered, even one 82-year-old woman was killed. Crimes are increasing in the state,” she said.

“What can be expected from BJP who is welcoming criminals in their party. In Goa too we have minister with rape charges,” she pointed out.

Ashma Bi of Goa Forward Party (GFP) said the crimes against women have increased in the last five years.

“From 2019 to 2023, around 250 rapes have taken place on victims below 18 years of age and only 4 accused persons are convicted. It is a shame on the government that conviction is so low. Who is responsible for it?,” she questioned.

“Is Goa the safest place? No, it is unsafe for women. Beti Bachao Beti Padhao has been reduced to just slogans and not  a reality. Are these slogans to hoodwink women? Why do they speak about women empowerment,” she questioned.
