BJP must stop promoting ‘political divorces’: Congress

PANJIM: The opposition Congress on Tuesday charged that the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) governments at the Centre and the State in providing basic comforts to the people is the root cause of rising family disputes resulting in divorces. BJP must also stop promoting ‘political divorces’ to set an example to the young generation, it said.

Reacting to Law Minister Nilesh Cabral’s statement to make pre-marriage counselling mandatory in the State, Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) general secretary Amarnath Panjikar said, “Faulty policies and mismanagement of the BJP government are the most important factors responsible for the family feuds.”

“BJP governments after coming to power have completely mismanaged the economy. The unilateral decision of demonetisation, unthoughtful and sudden implementation of GST and unplanned nation-wide lockdown, have resulted in collapse of the economy. BJP governments have failed to provide jobs to youth resulting in collapse of household budgets,” Panjikar said.

He added that the Goa government pushed the State into bankruptcy. “The abrupt decision of former Chief Minister late Manohar Parrikar to stop mining activity came as a first blow to the backbone of Goa’s economy. Successive BJP governments finished tourism industry with mass corruption and lack of vision in promoting Goa as safe and secured tourist destination.”

Panjikar, however, appreciated Cabral’s statement admitting that divorce cases are on the rise and that the minister must understand that the rising disputes and conflicts in the families are due to social insecurity for which the BJP government is responsible.

“Today, the highly qualified youth are without jobs. No employment opportunities are made available to the youth. BJP government has focused only on rhetoric of ‘Acche Din’ when in reality people are passing through real bad times. The Law Minister’s statement on divorces is clear cut admission of failure of BJP government to give confidence to the people,” Panjikar stated.

“I would like to suggest to the Law Minister to send a proposal to BJP High Command advising them to conduct counselling to their party functionaries on respecting people’s mandate. It is BJP which has time and again promoted ‘divorce culture’ among MLAs to somehow keep their party in power. BJP encouraged ‘political divorces’ in Goa, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and various other States to grab power from the backdoor. These types of political marriages also don’t last long,” Panjikar said.
