MARGAO: The Goa Forward Party (GFP) on Thursday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is using history-sheeters to threaten the opposition candidates and their families.

A GFP worker from Ward No 6 of MMC claimed that he was threatened by a criminal Anwar Shaikh, out on bail, who warned him of dire consequences if he takes the help of ‘Vijai’.

A complaint was filed by Simon Furtado for threatening him and accordingly, the Fatorda Police have booked Shaikh.

Describing the connection between Anwar Shaikh and the BJP, GFP vice president Durgadas Kamat informed that Anwar had thanked the former Fatorda MLA Damu Naik for having helped him after he was assaulted at Arlem on February 16.

“When BJP can’t win the MMC polls they try to cheat and win. When they realised they can’t win by cheating they are trying “goondaism” by creating fear in the minds of opposition candidates,” Durgadas claimed.

“These acts don’t happen without political patronage,” he said and warned that ‘if any untoward incident happens with GFP candidates the Chief Minister will be responsible.’

“We want to tell the government that if you can’t win, don’t indulge in any of such acts. If you threaten our candidates or their families and any incident happens; the BJP and Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant will be responsible for it,” he warned.
