PANJIM: Following the statement by Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, BJP Women’s Wing has softened its stand towards the controversial movie ‘Padmavat’ claiming they won’t object if the period drama starring Deepika Padukone gets a green signal from the Censor Board.
“Our protest was because the earlier scenes in the movie were objectionable and hurt Rajput sentiments. We extended our support demanding a ban (until the controversial portions were removed). But if the movie is granted a censor certificate with some modifications by Censor Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the (Padmavati) character is projected rightly, we have no objection to the screening of the film,” BJP Mahila Morcha President Sulakshana Sawant told Herald.
In December 2017, the wing had submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister alleging the film distorts history and wrongly links queen Padmavati with Muslim ruler Allaudin Khilji who is an aggressor.
The memorandum had said that the release of the film could hurt sentiments of a large section of society creating unrest in Goa.
Meanwhile, Goa State Women’s Commission member Neena Naik refused to comment on the yet-to-be released movie but said, “There is no provision for banning a film in certified rules. It’s a threat to freedom of expression. It (Padmavat) will be released on January 26 and it would be unfair to comment before watching the movie. Whatever changes recommended by the Censor Board have been complied with,” she stated.
On Wednesday, Parrikar had categorically stated that State government would not interfere if the film producers get a censor certificate, but would check for any possible law and order problem.
