BMC bans plastic bags in Bicholim

BICHOLIM: The Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) has taken seriously, the mission of making Bicholim plastic free by serving notices on all the establishments and general public and also distributing cloth bags in the market.
The notice issued to vendors asks them to stop immediately use of plastic bags below 50 microns and obtain permission from the municipality for using bags of prescribed thickness.
A monthly fee of Rs 4000 or an annual fee of Rs 48000 is also applicable for registration. The offenders will attract a penalty of Rs 5000 and confiscation of plastic bags, while a person found with plastic bag will be fined Rs 500. 
Besides, the municipality will distribute cloth bags to the general public and shopkeepers. 
“We have taken the ban on plastic very seriously and it will continue. We call upon the public to use cotton bags instead of plastic ones, which are harmful to the general public,” Municipal Chairman Satish Gaonkar said.
