BMC councillors take on Chief Officer over graft charges

Allege building given approval without completion of legal formalities; passes resolution to hand over probe to Vigilance

BICHOLIM: The meeting of Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) witnessed heated-arguments over the Chief Officer (CO) allegedly granting approval to a building without completing the legal procedure.

A resolution to hold an inquiry into the case through the Vigilance Cell was passed in the meeting.  However, the CO officer was not present from the meeting as he was on leave.

Deputy Collector Rohan Kaskar however is holding charge at the moment and the councillors demanded for an in-depth inquiry and information about the case.

Bicholim MLA Dr Chandrakant Shetye as well as all the fourteen councillors were present for the meeting.  Dr Shetye instructed the municipal officials sternly. “You, the government employees should not take the people’s representatives for granted.  Don’t support illegal activities just to make 20% people happy and offend the rest.  The municipal council gets a bad reputation for no reason and if the officers and employees do not want to cooperate, then they should say so,” said Shetye.  He also told the officer’s staff to guide the councillors properly while handling the municipal affairs.

Stray cattle, parking problems, electricity, water, gutter system, development projects and remuneration for the councillors were some of the other issues which were discussed during the meeting.

Chairperson Kundan Falari, councillors Nilesh Tople, Sudan Govekar, Riaz Baig, Deepa Shirgaonkar, Gunjan Korgaonkar, Aniket Chanekar, Satish Gaonkar, Deepal Pal, Vijaykumar Natekar, Tanuja Gaonkar, Sukhada Teli, Ranjana Vaingankar and Aparna Fogueri all participated in the discussion.
