BICHOLIM: To stop the rising menace of stray cattle, the Bicholim Municipal Council (BMC) has called upon the general public to adopt one cattle and has also urged the NGOs to support them in this cause.
Stray cattle menace is a major problem in Bicholim with the municipality trying its best to stop it. The municipality has also rounded up several cattle and has maintained them near the garbage treatment site. But the BMC is finding it difficult to impound all the stray cattle and keep them in their custody.
“Stray cattle menace is a major problem in Bicholim and especially on Wednesdays, the bazaar day, it becomes very risky to enter the market as these animals create havoc there,” a Bicholim resident Tejas Khedekar said adding “Despite driving away these cattle, they enter the vegetable market and freely move around even when there is a rush, posing danger to the people.”
As a suggestion to all these problems BMC Chairman Satish Gaonkar has stated that the only option for doing away with the cattle menace is by taking the responsibility of these cattle by the residents of Bicholim.
“We know that cattle create problem for the people of Bicholim. They are problems not only for the pedestrians but also for the vehicle riders. The NGOs and the Goshala should approach us and we can round up these cattle and hand them over to these NGOs,” Gaonkar said adding, “Through the aid that we are getting, we can then fund these NOGs so that the fodder expenditure of these animals could be met.”
“We round up the cattle and fine the owners, but if no one comes to claim the cattle the other option is to auction these animals. We do not auction these animals as there is always a possibility that they could be purchased for some bad purpose like slaughter. It would be a best idea if Bicholkars take the responsibility of these cattle and every resident decides to take care of one animal it would be of great help,” he said
“It they decide to adopt one animal it would also give them a sense of satisfaction of doing service to this animals,” Gaonkar said adding that if every individual thinks in this sense then there would be control over the cattle that enter the market.
Gaonkar has thus called upon the residents to come forward and adopt these cattle on humanitarian grounds.
