MARGAO: Three bodies that had been sent to Hospicio Hospital, Margao, for a postmortem were left to rot in the open from Sunday morning to afternoon as the doctor was allegedly unavailable. The delay had sparked anger among the families and friends of the deceased, while the Sanguem MLA has demanded an inquiry into the matter.
Two bodies had been brought from GMC, Bambolim, while the third was brought from Sanguem. All three had to be moved to back GMC for the postmortem.
Incidentally, one of the deceased was 22-year-old Surekha Jamuni, who suffered injuries in the Gandhi Market fire earlier this month. She is now the second casualty. Her two-month-old child is recovering at GMC.
Meanwhile, Sanguem MLA Subhash Phal Dessai has demanded a thorough inquiry into the incident and the doctor’s qualifications, as well as suspension of the doctor. He stated that he would try to raise the issue in the upcoming Assembly session and added, “The government has to take stern action against the negligent doctor.”
Dessai had visited the hospital after being informed that a family from Sanguem was amongst those waiting for a postmortem. Citizens have also strongly criticised the government over the issue and for putting them through hardships.
It was also reportedly discovered that the doctor had been admitted to the Curchorem Health Centre for some ailment.
