VASCO: The Bogmalo-Chicolna village panchayat implemented assessment and enhancement of commercial taxes within its jurisdiction following a resolution passed by the gram sabha.
The Bogmalo-Chicolna panchayat became the first village panchayat in the State to implement assessment and enhancement of commercial taxes, in an attempt to become self-reliant, panchayat sources stated.
Bogmalo-Chicolna sarpanch Sankalp Mahale said that the village panchayat was determined to become self-sufficient since the panchayat was carved out in 1997. But during the last 25 years, the panchayat had not collected commercial taxes despite so many commercial establishments coming up in the village. He hoped that this additional revenue will help the panchayat to become self-reliant and undertake development works, in all its seven wards and also be able to construct a new panchayat ghar.
Mahale further disclosed that the panchayat wanted to introduce commercial taxes over two years ago but deferred the decision due to Covid-19 pandemic.
