VASCO: Admitting that the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security of India (BCASI) had raised concerns about the Multi Level Car Parking facility at the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) at Dabolim airport, the Airport Director M Suresh said the airport authority has set up a bomb disposal squad at the NITB.
Speaking to Herald, Suresh said the BCASI had suggested some security measures before commissioning the Multi Level Car Parking facility at the NITB.
“Acting on the suggestions of the BCASI, the airport authority has set a Bomb Disposal Squad at the NITB. Vehicles will be frisked before they enter the car parking lot with the help of CISF personnel and sniffer dogs,” said Suresh.
He further informed that the airport authority has procured six sniffer dogs for the Dabolim airport.
“Three sniffer dogs are presently with the CISF attached to the Dabolim airport, while the remaining three are undergoing training at the Dogs Training Centre in Gwalior,” said Suresh.
“Various agencies are involved in assessing the security and safety measures at the NITB and the airport authority is following all recommendations of these agencies,” he said.
“Assessing safety and security measures is an ongoing process and every time these agencies visit the site, certain recommendations are made to upgrade the system,” he stated.
Suresh defended the decision to commence operations even before testing the infrastructure at the NITB. “There will be some teething problems in the initial stage at the NITB, but unless and until we shift operations at the NITB, we will not be able to know the actual problems faced,” Suresh told Herald.
“Positioning of the cameras, the signage and other equipments can be corrected once the NITB is put to use. Presently, only limited flights are allowed to operate from the NITB,” said Suresh.
“It will take another 10 days for the smooth functioning of the operations at the NITB.”
