Book daughter’s mother-in-law for dowry harassment, mental torture: Woman

Demands new autopsy on body of her daughter under new panel of doctors

PANJIM: Ana Maria Dias, a resident of Sao Jose De Areal has petitioned the Chief Secretary, Home Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP) demanding that the mother-in-law of her daughter be booked for dowry harassment, mental torture and murder.

In the petition submitted to the Deputy Collector office Margao, on Monday, the aggrieved woman has alleged that her daughter Sumanta Fernandes was ill-treated, tortured and harassed by her mother-in law, which led to Sumanta’s death.

She has also demanded that a new autopsy be conducted on the body of her daughter with the new panel of doctors.

A copy of the complaint has also been submitted to the Maina-Curtorim police alleging dowry harassment, domestic violence and murder of her daughter, she said.

Ana Maria Dias has submitted that her daughter had called up her on August 29 saying that she was unable to bear up harassment meted out to her by her mother-in-law. “She had put fire on my daughter and threatened to kill her child, in case she informed any of their family members,” the complainant has alleged.

“A heated argument had taken place in Sumanta’s house between Sumanta and her mother-in-law as the latter was demanding dowry. The argument turned into a fight and Sumanta pushed her mother-in-law in self-defence and in anger and the latter set Sumanta afire,” Ana Maria alleged in her complaint.
