VASCO: In order to reduce the gravity of the sludge oil spill that has started seeping out from the cruise liner M V Qing grounded at Western India Shipyard Limited (WISL) premises, the Mormugao Port Trust and the Indian Coast Guard officials started operation on Sunday.
According to the information, MPT Chairman I Jayakumar, along with Coast Guard, Goa unit chief, DIG Manoj Baadkar, inspected the vessel on Sunday morning. During the inspection, they noticed an increase in the sludge oil spill surrounding the vessel and decided to use booming methods to clear the spill.
“After inspecting the site, we immediately took the decision to use booming method to control the oil pollution at sea as the vessel, awaiting to be salvaged has been releasing sludge oil since the time it had hit the sea bed. Now as the booms have been used, I am sure pollution would be contained within a specific area and the same could later be cleared. Also, we have asked the MPT to ensure that the 350-odd tonnes of oil that is stored in the vessel be removed first and only then the salvaging team should attempt to float the vessel,” DIG Manoj Baadkar told Herald.
