MAPUSA: Border check posts and police stations have been put on alert after Ramchandra Yellapa, a prisoner under trial for rape escaped from the Colvale Jail premises.

For jail authorities, it’s still a mystery as to how Yellapa managed to escape on Tuesday morning. However, the authorities still do not rule out the possibility of Yellapa hiding in the jail premises.

Sources informed that in 2019 Yellapa had escaped from police custody and it was learnt that he was hiding in the next building and later fled. There is possibility that he may be hiding inside the jail premises.

Additional Inspector General of Police Ashutosh Apte said, “The prisoner is not yet traced. We have already informed the Collector and the police about the incident. We still cannot confirm that he may have escaped through jail walls and also we have not ruled the possibility of him hiding in the jail itself. Our search is still on”.

“It has been decided that such lapses are unpardonable and need to be dealt with sternly. Report of this incident has already been completed and in the prima facie found three officials including senior official with clear lapses on their part. They will be placed under suspension tomorrow”, Apte added.

Apte informed that inquiry in this matter would continue and if any more officials are found with such lapses then they would be dealt with stern action.
