Borim Bridge to be ‘partially closed. for 10 days from Oct 21

PANJIM: The Public Works Department (PWD), on Thursday, announced partial closure of Borim Bridge for a period of 10 days from October 21, for undertaking repairs of expansion joints.
In a press statement issued, PWD has said that during the closure period, the traffic of both the ways would be allowed on only one lane thus leading to slow down of the vehicular movement.
“Borim Bridge on NH-17B will remain partially closed for all vehicular traffic for 10 days from October 21 to 30, 2019 allowing traffic of both the ways on one lane, resulting slow down of traffic on both sides of bridge, during repairing of expansion joints,” PWD said.
Amidst the news about vibration on the bridge, PWD had clarified that it is caused due to finger type expansion joint, which will be taken up immediately after monsoon by arranging regulation of traffic for 10 days on the bridge.
The department had said that government is concerned about health status of this bridge and adequate measures have been taken to keep it safe and fit for traffic.
The bridge is currently maintained by Mumbai based Freyssinet Presttressed Concrete Company Limited.
The department had also said that Ministry of Road Transport and Highway (MORTH) has approved the alignment for the proposed alternative new Borim Bridge.
It had said that considering the existing bridge is nearly 33 years old, an alternative long term proposal for a new bridge and bypass connecting NH17B at Loutolim is planned. This alignment has already been approved by the ministry.
