PONDA: Borim locals have demanded a new Borim Bridge and a bypass road within two years.
The locals said the government in recent time had new bridges at several places in Goa, including new one at Khandepar but despite being in a dilapidated condition Borim Bridge which connects South with North has remained neglected.
“It has been several years we are waiting for a new bridge as well as a bypass road to decongest Borim village from traffic congestion,” said the villagers.
According to villagers the Borim Bridge has completed its life span of 30 years. Over the past decade the bridge is overburdened with additional heavy traffic diverted from Zuari Bridge.
Government conducts frequent repairs but in case it collapses locals travelling from South to North besides inter-State traffic from Belgaum to Karwar will be badly hit, the villagers added.
The locals have asked the government and the National Highway Authorities to expedite process for construction of a new bridge.
“We are demanding a new bridge for a long time now. Borim locals are fed up with frequent traffic jams and long queues of vehicles in village right from Borim Bridge to Bythokhol, Borim that separates them in two parts. Even a minor accident or breakdown of heavy vehicle on narrow road of Borim Villages causes lot of inconvenience,” said panch Sunil Sawkar.
The National Highway officials say land acquisition for a new bridge is completed. PWD Minister Deepak Pauskar also said the approvals from Central government for Rs 420 crore for new bridge and bypass road is expected soon.
