VASCO: A portion of a house was damaged after a boulder came crashing down the hill following a landslide at New Vaddem, Vasco due to heavy rains.
A couple who was residing in the house has now shifted to their relative’s house.
House owner Sebastian Rodrigues said that on Monday one portion of the house was partly damaged after a tree fell on it.
She said that while cutting the tree, the Vasco Fire Station personnel had warned them about the imminent danger and by afternoon a boulder came rolling down damaging the wall of the bathroom.
On getting the information, Vasco MLA Krishna `Daji’ Salkar rushed to the spot and said that the work of constructing a retaining wall is in the final stages and that he is awaiting a few NOCs from private landowners. Once these NOCs are obtained the retaining wall will be built, he said.
Recalling the death of a woman due to a landslide a few years ago, Salkar said that he had already apprised the Chief Minister of the issue and had requested him to take immediate measures.
He said that offering compensation to the victim and the house owners was not a solution and that the retaining wall will be built as a top priority.
According to Mormugao Municipal Council Councillor Nandadeep Raut, who was also present during the inspection said that landslides were occurring at the site during monsoon for the last four years and requested the MLA to expedite the work of constructing a retaining wall there.
He also suggested that as a precautionary measure the people residing nearby be shifted to another place during monsoon.
