PONDA: A Class XI student of a Higher Secondary School at Farmagudi stabbed a Class XII student twice in the stomach and chest with a sharp object causing deep gashes. The incident happened on Thursday afternoon. The victim was first rushed to Ponda sub-District Hospital and then shifted to GMC where he is undergoing treatment in ICU. The accused belongs to a politically linked family of the area. Further details are not being mentioned as the accused is a minor.
The spine-chilling incident that took place when the victim was standing at the bus stop near Farmagudi Circle has shocked the student and teacher fraternity. The incident went viral immediately.
Before the cops could reach the spot, the student was rushed to a private doctor who suggested him to be shifted to the sub-District Hospital because of seriousness of the injuries and from there the victim was shifted to Goa Medical College. He was in a critical condition.
The victim received cuts and was bleeding profusely. The accused initially fled the spot after stabbing. Since a minor accused cannot be arrested, the police have taken him into custody for probe and are looking for the weapon.
According to the police, a fight broke out over a petty issue. It is learnt that during a fancy dress competition held in the college premises at the time of Ganesh Festival, the accused had lobbed fire crackers and locally made Dada bombs. He was scared that the victim, who had recorded the same, would have shown it to the authorities and blackmailed him.
On spotting the victim standing at the bus stop on Thursday afternoon, the accused rushed to him and after an altercation, he stabbed him twice.
According to Ponda Deputy SP, Sunita Sawanth, police have registered the crime under Section 307 (attempt to murder).
Police have taken custody of the accused. She confirmed that the victim was stabbed twice, once on the chest and on his stomach. The cops are still looking for the weapons. She said, the weapon may not be the ones used in school labs.
The victim’s father Mukund Prabugaonkar from Veling had registered a complaint stating that his son was stabbed at the bus stop located near PES higher Secondary.
Meanwhile, one of the accused the politically linked relatives expressed grief over incident and said, “It is a sad incident and I am shocked. I am praying for his recovery.” He regretted the GenNext’s changing attitude and said the new lot was also disobedient.
A professor, Namdev Naik, said, “We, the teachers should take responsibility. We need to inculcate good culture, sense of brotherhood and oneness among students.”
He went on to say, “It was sad to see how young kids lose their temper so fast and can take such bloody revenge.”
He also said along with education, there is need for counselling so that students do not take such drastic steps against their mates.”
