PORVORIM: Boys topped in all three subjects of physics, chemistry and mathematics at the 2018 Goa Common Entrance Test (GCET), results of which were declared on Monday by Directorate of Technical Education (DTE).
The drop in the physics average has, however, led to academicians voicing fears over the quality of physics education in schools.
Shailesh Kamat topped in physics scoring 68 marks out of total 75, while Ravindra Kudchadkar stood first in chemistry with 70 marks and Arsh Korgaonkar in math with 71 marks.
Addressing the media, Education Secretary Daulat Hawaldar said, “The test was conducted on May 8 and 9 across 15 centres. In all 4169 candidates had registered to appear at GCET. The test results were evaluated and processed, using electronic ORS. The test has been conducted and results prepared with the active cooperation of IIT Bombay.”
This year for physics 3994 students appeared and the highest marks were 68 and lowest 0. In chemistry 3983 students appeared with highest marks being 70 while the lowest was 9, whereas in maths 3088 appeared with highest marks being 71 and the lowest 6. The average for physics was 21.17, for chemistry it was 28.29 while in maths it was 28.73.
S S Major, coordinator from IIT Bombay, which helps DTE to conduct GCET, chose to point to the drop in average marks in physics fearing the quality of physics education in Goa’s schools.
“In spite of making the physics paper much easier, the average has not gone up. You can see the drastic difference between all three subjects. We feel that 25 is a good figure and probably we need to tone up teaching of physics in schools.” He added, “In the last few years we are seeing the average go down.”
Students are advised to fill up the admission form (B/B1/B2) for admissions to professional degree courses and submit self attested copies of documents, together with the admission forms. These forms will be accepted at the Directorate of Technical Education, Porvorim and at Ravindra Bhavan, Margao from Thursday May 17 to Friday May 25 from 10 am to 1 am and 2 pm to 5 pm.
“Students passing Class 12 from Boards other than Goa Board, whose results are not declared by May 25, 2018, are required to submit the duly filled up admission forms by May 25, 2018. Results are to be submitted, immediately upon the declaration,” the DTE Chairman said.
