Britain’s King Charles Diagnosed with Cancer, Postpones Public Duties for Treatment

Buckingham Palace on Monday announced, revealing that Britain’s King Charles, aged 75, has been diagnosed with a form of cancer. The monarch will temporarily step back from public-facing duties as he undergoes treatment, with hopes of returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

King Charles ascended to the throne following the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth, on September 8, 2022, after serving as the longest-serving heir apparent in British history. His coronation took place on May 6, 2023.

While the health of the royal family is traditionally regarded as a private matter, King Charles has consistently maintained a public image of vitality, adhering to a daily exercise routine and refraining from lunch. His recent appearance in public alongside his wife, Queen Camilla, at church on Sunday showed no signs of his cancer diagnosis.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday wished a speedy recovery to the King on X, formerly known as Twitter “I join the people of India in wishing speedy recovery and good health to His Majesty King Charles III”

In an official statement, Buckingham Palace disclosed, “During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.”

“His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual. His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer,” the statement said further.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak expressed his well wishes for the monarch’s recovery on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Wishing His Majesty a full and speedy recovery. I have no doubt he’ll be back to full strength in no time and I know the whole country will be wishing him well.”

The announcement of King Charles’ diagnosis coincides with the recovery of his daughter-in-law, Kate, the Princess of Wales, who recently underwent abdominal surgery and was hospitalized for approximately two weeks.
