SANGUEM: Residents of Sanguem have raised the alarm over the broken safety rails on both sides of the Portuguese-era bridge at Uguem, calling for the authorities to replace them on an urgent basis, given the danger it poses to motorists, particularly during nighttime. The bridge is also in darkness most of the time, as the streetlights in the vicinity only work sporadically.
The bridge is frequented by a large number of people travelling from Sanguem towards Uguem, Netravali, Wadem, Kalay and Bhati, on a daily basis. “The railings of the old bridge were damaged quite a few years ago, but the PWD authorities seem to be waiting for accidents to occur, to replace the damaged railings,” said a local.
The bridge is also frequented by a large number of stray cattle, which could fall over the railings or cause a two-wheeler rider to fall over accidentally. To make matters worse, the street lights on the stretch also remain out of order most of the time.
The citizens have demanded the immediate replacement of the guard railings of the bridge, and also pointed out that the overgrown shrubbery on either side of the bridge adds to road users’ woes as the broken railings, and the edges of the bridge remain hidden in the thick bushes.
