MAPUSA: While farming activity, especially the cultivation of paddy in the state has been delayed due to the late arrival of monsoon, the farmers of Asnoi khazans Corjuem will have to wait for another week for their fields have been submerged due to breaching of the sluice gate. The farmers here are unable to cultivate their fields due to ingress of saline water.
Farmers complained that the sluice gate was broke almost two months and since there is no committee in place, nobody paid attention towards its repair.
Farmer Satyawan Kerkar said, “Two months ago, the sluice gate was broken and during the last week of heavy rains, our fields were submerged under water. Worried over this issue, on Sunday all the farmers gathered and met our Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira and requested his intervention.”
Meanwhile, Aldona MLA called Water Resources Department Assistant Engineer Sudesh Parulekar and Supervisor Avinash Ajgaokar for an urgent inspection. After conducting the inspection, the officials decided to take up temporary repair of the sluice gate so that farmers can cultivate the fields while the work of the entire sluice gate will be taken up after the monsoon.
